Abstract

This thesis is devoted to generate photorealistic image of ocean waves and the related effects. We propose some modeling/rendering procedures for generating ocean images. This thesis discusses the issues on oceanography-based ocean waves modeling, ocean waves rendering, and ocean spray rendering. Considering a ship sailing across the ocean that incurs waves, the effects around the ship are simulated by applying basic wave propagation mathematics. By adjusting heuristic weighting of lighting coefficients according to the time and the environment, we are able to render the ocean scene corresponding to 24 hours of one day. Till now, each frame takes less than 2 second for rendering, and the resulting images are very amazing with sky background of a real image. In addition, we will apply the research to another project, of which one requirement is interactive and real-time display of ocean waves. Therefore we aim to develop a fast rendering of ocean waves without using ray-tracing methods in the work.
